Moving is a daunting task. Whether you’re tackling a corporate relocation or simply moving your small business over a few blocks, the process can be stressful and hectic.

As you and your employees plan for the adjustment, it’s essential that there is a move strategy in place so the team can get back to work as quickly as possible. Believe it or not, the preparation can take anywhere from 6 months to a year and can lead to quite a dip in productivity.

To avoid stress and revenue loss, our move experts have put together 4 tips to help your staff navigate a corporate relocation.

Assign Department Heads to Review Materials

Assign members of your team to review critical and time sensitive move plan segments.

Relocating a business is a very difficult task to assign to just one team member. If you’re attempting a move with just the help of your internal staff, try divvying out the responsibility to ensure everything gets done on time and on budget.

Select and assign move coordinators for each and every department. Once those team members have been identified, they can schedule strategy and check-up meetings to make sure every department is on track.

Review Electrical Plans

Nothing is more frustrating than showing up to work at a new space and not being able to access necessary equipment. Phones, PCs, printers, fax, copier locations and extensions should be packed diligently and carefully. If you are able to arrange a technician to come out and set up the new office before any staff arrives, that’d be ideal.

Take the extra step during planning to double check locations against electrical floor plans.

Create a Coporate Relocation Packing Plan

Make it as simple as possible for your team to pack up their work materials and belongings to ensure everything can be relocated to their new office efficiently. Provide any move materials they need; from packing paper to boxes and labels.

Create an employee move handbook and/or move procedures handout. This can be distributed in person or via email weeks before the move so everyone on the team knows what is expected from them during the transition.

Take this organization a step further by communicating with facility management to make sure elevators and access requirements will be fulfilled on the date of the move. Nothing is worse than being delayed by something as simple as elevator access. Coordinating this step with the proper leadership will take some unnecessary headache out of the moving process.

Be Available for Post Move Corrections

Address issues that become apparent as employees arrive to their new workspace. No matter how much planning goes into the move, there’s a chance something could go wrong or be overlooked.

It’s important to be available to solve any issues or make any adjustments that will make employees happier with their new surroundings.
